BREATH – NEFES

Current life is shaped by body and space, thus individual and social experiences, official ideologies, patriarchy and consumer culture.
The “Occupy Taksim”, which started as a struggle for the rights of the city and nature in 2013 and turned into a social movement as a result of the harsh intervention of the government, and the psychological and physical pressure of the government that continued afterwards, made the city and the country unbreathable. Created an atmosphere of pressure made breathing impossible.

“Nefes”, a Turkish word of Arabic origin, includes the meanings of breath taken, wish to the patient for healing and vitality, signs of life. Work indicates the vital value of “breath”, which is a vital act.

From my experience, I point to a need in society. If breathing is a necessity for life and for social structure, it draws attention to a “breath interval” that is needed by every identity. The work consists of pearl embroideries on satin.
